What to keep handy for the first night

Make arrival comfortable without trying to unpack the entire home at once.

What to keep handy for the first night

The first night does not need to look like a magazine photograph. Somewhere to sleep, something to eat, and everyday belongings within reach are already a good start.

Pack an arrival bag

Include clothes, toiletries, a towel, chargers, and whatever each person normally needs. Add familiar bedtime items for children or pets where appropriate.

Keep this bag accessible during the move. Buried beneath twenty boxes, it stops serving its purpose. Bring the contact details needed for the handover and building access as well.

Decide what you will not do

Choose one room, or part of a room, to finish for that evening. Cupboards, decoration, and paperwork do not all need solving together.

Keep walkways and exits clear. Avoid stacking boxes where you will need to walk in low light. If you discover a problem with a service or installation, report it and seek appropriate help rather than improvising a repair while tired.

Save tomorrow's questions

Write down what is missing, what does not work as expected, and what you need to ask. A short list lets you rest without trying to remember everything.

The home can remain unfinished. What matters that evening is being able to use it comfortably and knowing where the essentials are.
